"Living the Good Life" in Crete - Greece is an organic farm of 8000 square meters with 40 mature olive trees, 110 new olive trees, various fruit trees and 50 wine producing mature grape vines. A building permit for a 70sqm stone house exists. Living accomodation is in the form of 2 porta-cabins joined into one building. Features have been added using rocks that fit the natural environment.
All the rocks have been dug out, and were used to build a wall 1.5 meters high by 50 centimeters wide around the property. A stone building at the front of the property is used to house the solar electricity system, generator, wine in various stages of production plus a storage area for general goods, made wine and olive oil.
The olive trees and grape vines are certified organic in the Bio Hellas programme, www.bio-hellas.gr/en/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx.
"Living the Good Life" has numerous fruit trees: Orange, mandarin, lemon, lime, peach, nectarine, apricot, quince, almond, chestnut, walnut, guava, mango, summer avocado, winter avocado, green apple, red apple, damson, pomegranate, black, fig, and green fig. We have also added Kalamata olives and eating olives. Along the side of the road have been planted 50 Romaicos grapes which produce the famous Cretan village wine. In 2010, Five bee hives were set up, and have produced 24 kilos of honey which from such juvenile hives is very good.
The only bills paid are for drinking and agricultural water, diesel fuel for the generator and tractor.
We opted not to use mains electricity but a recently installed transformer in the next field will make connection very affordable, and 3 phase wiring is in place within the top of the wall to facilitate this.
